The Village Based Development Programme

VIBADEP works in Buseesa and in Bujuni Catholic Parishes in Matale and Kyebando subcounties of Kibaale District.It has a field office at Matale trading centre.

Objectives

To improve and consolidate household income and food security in the beneficiary villages through enhanced efforts to increase the quality and quantity of household agricultural production.

To improve household health practices and community health service delivery systems in Matale and Kyebando sub counties.

To mainstream gender in all Programme sectors, improve gender justice and increase the respect and promotion of human rights in the project area.

To strengthen the community self-help capacity for effective mobilization, implementation and coordination of development activities in Buseesa parish.

Main Activities

Intergrated rural development activities e.g Sustainable agriculture training,support of farmers with improved crop varieties and animal breeds,rural water source development,human rights awareness campaigns,household sanitation improvement,gender and community empowerment,rural access road improvement,acquaculture, apiary and improvement of health services delivery facilities among others.

Target Group

VIBADEP woks with rural smallholder farmers who almost exlusively depend on land for their livelihood. They are less advantaged, severely underserved, low income earners but actively enthusiastic to participate in processes for their individual and community development.

Strategies included are: -

Food Security and Income Improvement strategy:

Training Farmers an provding them with such inputs as Food bananas,Cassava, Improved pigs, Improved goats, Rabbits, Cocks for cross breeding , Rural infrastructure improvement, apiary, Agro-rocessing

Health Improvement Strategy:

 

Training of community in good home hygine, Development of water sources, Support of vegetable and fruit growing, Nutrition Education to Communities, Promotion of Aquaculture,

Gender and human rights strategy:

Gender awareness trainings, Provision of household water jars, Promotion of energy saving technologies, Human rights sensitisation,

Leaders

Equipping community with leadership skills and facilities.

Progress Todate

The programme has been funded by CAFOD since 1998 Todate about 20,915 people in 4183 households have been directly assisted by the programme to improve their livelihoods. By January 2008, 86% of the beneficiaries earned at least UGX 100,000= per month up from less than UGX 10,000 in 2000.

VIBADEP has tremendously improved household and community food security levels in the area. Todate, 98% of the beneficiary households are food secure and they significantly contribute to food security in Kibaale district and the entire region.

The programme has improved the access road network for agro-marketing and access to social services in the area by installing 62 culvert bridges on access roads. VIBADEP has improved access to safe water in for at least 3500 households by constructing 48 shallow wells, 45 protected springs and 41 household water jars

VIBADEP has introduced community based HIV VCT services in Matale sub county. In March 2009 alone, 284 people in 8 villages accessed VCT sponsored by the programme
