The Sustainable HIV/AIDS Support and Care Project (SASCAP)

The Project has been implemented Hoima Caritas Development Organisation in partnership with Goal Uganda/GOAL Ireland since 2004.

Major Objectives of the project

Improving food security and income of the people living with HIV (PLWHA) in Bugambe, Buhanika and Kabwooya sub counties of Hoima district

Increasing  self-reliance of orphans and other vulnerable children (OVC) from Hoima town council, Kabwooya, Buhanika and Bugambe sub counties in Hoima district

.Mainstreaming Child Protection in the overall programming of HOCADEO

Strengthen organizational, technical and financial capacity  of HOCADEO to plan/manage  effective HIV interventions

Major Project Activities

Training PLWHA in organic farming methods and agronomic practices of selected crops.

Supporting the farmers with improved planting materials and livestock breeds of their choice as well as providing them with extension services

raining OVC in vocational skills in courses of their choice (including: tailoring, catering, carpentry and joinery, brick laying and concrete practice, motor vehicle mechanics and cosmetology).

Achievements

2660 people in 532 households have been supported todate

Todate 169 orphans have been trained in various vocational skills and equipped with relevant start-up tool kits.

363 people living with HIV have been directly supported in agriculture for food security and income

1. Over 90% of the trained OVC are in gainful employment.

Cosmetology and tailoring graduates are the most self-employed. Others work

2. Many of the former trainees are able to support their siblings and other family members.

3. Our tracer studies indicate 2 girls and one boy of the last in-take have so far build houses for their families

In Agriculture, at least 75% of the beneficiaries todate have tremendously improved their food security, nutrition and income.

1. They are successful and progressive farmers (crop and livestock producers)

2. They can pay school fees for their children

3. They easily access/pay for health services

4. They have overcome stigma and live freely and positively

Challenges

The financial ability of HOCADEO to reach all in need is still insufficient

Girls quickly get married and some are unable to adequately support their siblings as targeted

The rate of self-employment among trained OVC is still low due to inadequate start-up capital.
