HOCADEO is empowering thousands of poor but active women to access financial services and enable them boost their small businesses in communities where they live.
HOCADEO through the Promic project aims at empowering thousands of poor but active women to accesses financial services and enable them boost their small businesses in communities where they live. In 2021, a new area was created expanding to Promic 3 which is currently working in Kikoora in Kakindo Parish. Promic 1 which was entirely in Hoima district was also put on halt so that major recoveries can be achieved from the loan arears which had accumulated.
HOCADEO managed to make a monitoring visit in Promic 2 and 3 to its clients who benefited from the Promic loans to see the progress of their business. The findings indicate good progress and growth of the businesses of its beneficiaries.
HOCADEO takes the health of its beneficiaries very important for sustainable development to take place. It promotes household proper nutrition, hygiene, water and sanitation as well as HIV/AIDS prevention.
The Gender and Women Development Programme (GWDP) in Kagadi district promotes Hygiene in households through sensitizations and trainings which have helped Households to have Kitchen refuse pits, Pit latrines, Hand washing facilities, Dish racks and kitchen utensils racks. The communities have also been sensitized on the dangers of HIV/AIDS and also encouraged couples to go for voluntary counselling and testing.
Through HSAP, HOCADEO has been able to promote proper nutrition by promoting the growing of vegetables through training households on the good practices of Backyard gardening and has encouraged them to keep healthy b eating greens as part of their daily meals.
Through Meals for Nutrition (MENU), HOCADEO has promoted the growing and eating of Iron rich beans, yellow maize and the Orange fleshed sweet potatoes in response to the high malnutrition cases identified in the Bunyoro sub region. This programme has benefitted residents of Masindi, Hoima, and Kakumiro districts where people were given the seeds and vines for growing. Throughout the project lifecycle, significant efforts were made to integrate bio-fortified crops into the diets of the target beneficiaries with emphasis on diets for children under 5 years and women of reproductive age.
The impacts of the dietary diversity were elaborated qualitatively, for instance one of the respondents shared that “Many young children who had suffered from nutritional diseases became healthy and free from the skin diseases, rashes, stunted growth, vision. Among old people similar testimonies were observed among the beneficiaries and the people living with HIV gained immunity after being fed on OSP and iron beans.” (Nutrition Focal Person Kakumiro District-EOP Evaluation)
We support small holder farmers to improve their skills in the best practices of Agriculture and Livestock breed improvement. We help them to access better crop varieties, market information and offer them exposer visits. We also support the youth and vulnerable rural women acquire basic and DIT certified skills as an empowerment strategy to boost their livelihoods.

HOCADEO has been able to achieve the milestones below through the different programmes and projects it implemented in different districts. HSAP was implemented in Kagadi district, MENU was implemented in Kakumiro, Hoima and Masindi Districts, GWDP was implemented in Kagadi district, PHARVID was implemented in Kikube district and these are the major contributing programmes/projects to the achieved milestones in this Thematic Area.

Success story 1: From foot to Bike
Narwere Suzan, a beneficiary of Kyabeya village, Masaka parish, Nalweyo Sub County in Kakumiro District started as a tertiary vine multiplier in 2018 growing OSP vines on 0.5 of an acre and gradually expanded to two acres. Selling OSP vines and roots to different institutions, local communities and markets has enabled Suzan to save her income and investe in piggery and poultry a long side crop farming. She has been able to buy a brand-new motorcycle from her savings.
Success Story 2: Iron beans for school fees
Kikobe Sarah a resident of Mukaiha village, Bwijanga Sub County in Masindi District knew about MENU project in 2019A, during the awareness drives to promote biofortification of Iron Beans and OSPs. She picked interest in the project and started as a vulnerable farmer and in 2019A graduated to a commercial farmer where she bought 30kgs of iron beans and planted on 1.5 acres in agreement with the Nyamigisa Girls School to supply iron beans for fees exchange for her daughter. Sarah harvested 367 kgs valued at 660,600/= and exchanged them for school fees. I thank HarvestPlus through HOCADEO for supporting the education of my children.
