For the last five years, Caritas Uganda in partnership with Caritas New Zealand has cooperated with Hoima diocese to implement the Bukuumi Sustainable Agriculture Programme (Bukuumi SAP).
The Project that started in a few villages in Bukuumi parish, Kibaale district in Hoima diocese in 2000 has so far expanded to over 40 villages in the parishes of Bukuumi, Kakumiro and Mpasaana in three sub counties of Bugangaizi County.
This covers Kakumiro,Bukumi and Mpasana catholic Parishes in the sub counties of Bwanswa,Nkooko and Kisiita in Kibale District.
Main Activities
Sustainable agriculture training,extension services and support of farmers with improved crop varieties and animal breeds.
The Programme promotes organic farming practices among the poor small holder farmers to increase productivity per unit area, attain soil fertility management skills in order to increase food production and household income.
It also addresses post harvest handling and agro-marketing issues and offers extension services to the farmers
The Programme also conducts education seminars for the community on nutrition, household hygiene and sanitation and preventable diseases such as HIV, malaria and other communicable diseases prevalent in the area. It also carries out activities of conflict resolution and peace building.
